Fur blankets are very luxurious, but they are also something that’s going to require a lot of care as well. You’re going to find that you can’t treat fur like every other material and expect it to endure, and in fact you’re going to have to put some thought into your blanket if you want them to persevere. This is especially true of something a bit more delicate like mink blankets. You’ll find that mink fur is quite fine and soft, and therefore it takes work on your part to really protect it and ensure that you don’t do the fur any damage throughout the cleaning process. There are a few techniques that you can employ however, to ensure that your blanket stays as soft and beautiful as the day that you bought them.
But really it’s all about identifying your blanket as well, as there are different types of mink blankets. Whether you have a real fur blanket or one with faux fur is going to be vital, as it’s going to have a huge impact on how you can actually care for them. Man made fibers are always going to be more durable, so the faux types are always going to be a lot easier to care for which is also always going to be a good selling point. But when you’re talking about mink blankets with real fur, that can be a different story. So here’s what you’re going to have to keep in mind:
[1] First off, identify the type of mink throws that you have.
This means finding out whether or not they are real fur or fake fur. This is actually pretty easy to tell, and typically you can do so just by touching the fabric. Real fur is going to be very thick, but also extremely soft at the same time. That’s something that you will not find with acrylic fibers which is what’s used to make up the fake fur blankets. These types of mink blankets are always going to be a bit thicker, and will have more of a rough consistency, though they are also still nice in their own right.
[2] Caring for fake fur blankets.
If you find that you have man made mink throws, then you want to approach them carefully but you have a lot more freedom as well. These are always going to be strong enough to go in the washer, so your job is made much easier right from the outset. Just remember to still use the delicate cycle, and it’s also usually best if you use cold water too. That way you can ensure that you’re able to totally wash the blanket, and that you’re going to be able to prevent any color damage or anything of the like that could occur when you’re talking about washing items.
Of course you also want to be sure that you’re only tumble drying, and you don’t want to use too much heat. What that can do to the man made fibers is that it’s going to make them feel unnatural and you’re going to lose that natural fur type of feel to them that you had before. That’s really bad, and it’s something that you have to be careful of in the long haul. You’re already fighting an uphill battle with man made fibers, but you don’t want to make it harder on yourself by using the wrong type of dry cycle which is going to do them damage.
[3] Caring for real mink blankets.
If you have real mink fur blankets that need some care then you’re going to have to approach the problem in a different way. If you’re just talking about day to day maintenance. Then the best thing that you can do is using a dry rag that you can drag across the surface of the blanket, so that you can ensure you’re able to clear up all the dust and dirt that could be lodged within the fur. But you have to do this gently, and with the grain of the fur if you really want to be able to get all the material up.
You’ll also find that when washing you need to use a really mild detergent. You can wash these in the washer, but you have to ensure the weight is evenly distributed, and that it’s on the absolutely most delicate cycle. Plus you have to use dreft or woolite, which is made for the most delicate types of fabrics. Otherwise you’re going to have some problem with the fur feeling less than great, or even some of it falling out throughout the washing process.
